In medieval  times, young maidens would place herbs on their pillows to bring dreams of the ones they loved. Others used selected herbs to influence their dreams, and some believed that as they slept, dream pillows would bring visions of the future.

It was common place for our grandmothers to stitch up  on every bed filled with natures bountiful herbs and flowers.

Nowadays, people use them for many reasons.  As an aide to sleep, a headache pillow to erase the pain of headaches, to get rid of nasty nightmares, place in dresser drawers, place on your eyes while relaxing to ease eye strain,  place on your eyes to block out the light and to help you relax during meditation, if you lie down while meditating, or just as a way to have a nice, comforting aroma as you head off to sleep.

Below are a few simple patterns to make a Dream Pillows and examples of ingredients to use.

Simple Pattern for Dream Pillow

Materials:

100% Cotton or Silk Fabric 5" x 5" (or slightly larger if you wish)

Mesh bag for herbal insert (muslin is a perfect type of fabric for this project)

Herbs & Flowers:  1 part Rose Petals, 1 part Dried Chamomile, 1 part Dried Lavender

Essential Oils:  Choose any of the following - Yarrow, Sandlewood, Jasmine, Geranium, Basil, Lavender, Peppermint or Rose.  5-7 drops.

2 teaspoons Orris Root (fixative to retain scents)

Needle & Thread

Velcro

Pillow stuffing

Directions:

1. Cut your fabric into 2 pieces, one for the top of the pillow, the other for the bottom.

2. Sew the pieces together with the wrong side of the fabric on the outsides.

3. Sew 3 sides together then turn inside out so right sides are now showing.

4. Fill a mesh bag with the mixture of the flowers, herbs, orris root, and a few drops of essential oil, tie off with a string.

5. Place inside your pillow form and fill with pillow stuffing...don't overpack as it needs air circulation to release some of the scents.

6. Finish pillow off by adding velcro to the open end of the pillow, this will allow you access to change the herbs and flowers when needed or to wash the pillow itself.

It is best to keep the pillow in a flat shape not round.

Solstice Dream Pillows

Materials needed: 1-4 oz (30-120 gms) each of the following five herbs: dried Chamomile, Mugwort, Catnip, Hops, Lavender, whole Oranges & Lemons, Cinnamon Sticks, Allspice Berries, (optional) Myrrh or Frankincense resin lumps. Scraps of lightweight cloth (4-7 inches/100-175 mm, two for each bag) optional bits of ribbon, embroidery floss, scraps of lace or a few small beads.

Take the first five dried herbs and mix them in whatever proportions you desire or have on hand. More Mugwort will lead some to more psychic dreaming, more hops will lead to a sounder sleep for some others, more catnip may encourage feline pillow sharing.

As the night passes, eat the oranges, and use the lemons (minus their peels) in teas, punches and hot drinks. As you use them try to remove the peels in large chunks or in easy to work with sections. Using a spoon, carefully scrape out as much of the white inner rind as you can without damaging the zesty outer peel. Scatter the remaining outer peels on a cookie sheet and dry them on low heat in the oven (200F or less). Watch them to make sure they are drying but not scorching. Remove them from the oven, and let them cool.

If you have a fire or incense burner, burn some of the incense resins, saving most to use in the pillows.

Crumble the dried peels up into smaller bits, break up the cinnamon sticks up into smaller pieces, and add the spices, resins and peels to the herb mixture. Mix well. Gather up the scraps of material, and sew up small bags: 3-6 inches/75-150mm should be fine. Leave one side open: small openings will make it more difficult to fill the bags later. If you want to use the ribbons and floss to embroider protective or other magical symbols or representative designs, it will be easier to do before you stitch the sides together. Work on this to keep you awake, thinking of the season and what it means to you as you do it. If these are intended as gifts, think kindly and lovingly of the folks you will be giving these to.

Fill each of the bags with the herb and/or spice mixture, but not so full that it is hard, people will want to smell them, but they need to be soft enough to sleep on. Fold the last side inward, and stitch closed. If you want, a small loop of ribbon may be added at this point at the top.

When you go to bed, slip one or more of these into you pillow case, and inhale deeply as you relax and watch for special dreams as you sleep.

Faerie Dream Pillow

Cut out two squares of soft fabric approximately 6 inch squares using either velvet, velveteen or satin are preferred, sew around three sides of the squares with white or silver thread.

Mix in an enamel bowl:
Rose Petals (two parts)
Lemon Balm (two parts)
Clover (one part)
Mint (one part)
Lavender (one part )
Milkweed pod silky tassels (2 parts)

Turn the pillow inside out so that the seams don't show, stuff the pillow with your herb mixture. Sew up the end so that the herbs stay in the pillow. You can then decorate the pillow if you want with lace, silk, or embroider with designs, etc. Take this pillow to bed with you at
night and put it under your pillow. This not only smells great but will help you to have dreams of the fey.

NOTE: After six months these pillows may lose their "fresh" scent. You can reuse them by emptying out the old contents and refilling them with new herbs.
